We beg to inform you that we shipped per ss "Namur" per Amoy on 25 July last, on
through Bill of Lading via Hong Kong, in accordance with instructions given to us on the 16 July last by Mr. A. Sengpiel, Copenhagen.
5 Cases Umbrellas.
copies of correspondence enclosed herewith. The original sender, viz: Our Mr. A. Sengpiel of Copenhagen, requested us on his behalf to interest the Peninsular & Oriental Steam Navigation, owner of the ss "Namur", to wire their agents at Hong Kong to return these 5 Cases—which at our request, the P&O did at our expense. The P&O informed us on the 6th Nov last that upon examination of the cases at Hong Kong
it was found that some of the said cases were found by the Customs Authorities to also contain a
quantity of Opium & Morphia, and in consequence...
These gentlemen were out to deceive somebody, if only the steamship company: & I
think we should leave them to get what satisfaction they can out of the Hong Kong
Customs without assistance from us as proposed: copy corresp. to For.LF.
Copy will be sent to you. The issue was that J.J.S. was in cahoots with merchants, & comp. & Barr.
